Hawaiian Falls was once called Holiday Golf (and is still owned by that company) and was once filled with awesome fiberglass dinosaurs, giant bugs, bigger than life snakes and even an alien in a UFO. Sometime in the 1990's, the course was changed to reflect a hawaiian/tropical theme, perhaps to better compete with the new fangled adventure golf courses springing up around the area. What we have now is a visually appealing course (from A1A) mostly built on top of the fairways of the previous incarnation.

The difficulty varies widely throughout the course. Some holes seem fairly easy, but others are nothing short of challenging. One hole design in particular makes it hard just to keep your ball out of the parking lot due to a tricky uphill pointed toward Atlantic Avenue. With that said, the difficulty balance is acceptable and the frustrating holes are sprinkled throughout both courses.

Nothing overly creative here as far as hole design is concerned. A few holes in particular left us scratching our heads as to who designed them. Some of the holes appear to have been built with obstacles on them that are now gone. What is left is a pile of wood to putt around/through. Some of the most creative holes from the Holiday Golf days were reworked and now offer little more than a putt-around the obstacle challenge. I especially miss the UFO loop-the-loop hole.

I've stated above that the course is very visually appealing, at least on the frontside. The plants and flowers are very well kept. The problem is, as you move further back into the course, the design of the holes start to suffer. The three holes crammed into the cave is a bit much and seem like an afterthought. This course has so much history and potential I feel bad that I didn't enjoy it more. With a little love and tender loving care, this could truly be a great course again.

Warning: Watch out for bees. They are attracted to the flowers around the course. We had to skip three holes as the bees were attracted to the colorful golf balls.
