This course is located at Ithaca's Sciencenter,
a children's science museum. (www.sciencenter.org) It is one of the
most unusual and creative miniature golf courses that I have ever
encountered. Each hole is designed to demonstrate
a scientific concept. Some of the best
holes were the hole in which one pollinates a plant with one's ball, the very
long putt through a model of the solar system, and the one where one's ball
rolls down a model of the double helix.
However, putting purists might find some of the course off-puting. To
demonstrate principles of friction, some of the holes use unusual surfaces,
such as plastic and metal, and two of the holes have you tee off without using
a club. While the course is very clever,
some of the practical considerations are lacking. The borders of some of the holes are too
small, making it very easy to launch a ball off the course. The playability of
the course was not as high as one might like. Also, on the day we played, the
course was not well maintained, with lots of leaves and twigs on the
course. If one finds oneself in the
neighborhood of Ithaca,
it is definitely worth a visit. I
enjoyed it, despite some of its weaknesses.
