Green Course

Difficulty: 6

Creativity: 4

Atmosphere: 9

The Green Course was host to the 2014 USPMGA U.S. Open and is a Harris course.  We did not play the Blue Course but it is also designed by Harris.  As a result, the variety in the types of holes is not that wide and many of the holes have similar shots.  There are a couple of variations not seen often but nothing surprising. Similar to most Harris courses the first play through will result in a slight higher score but if you play the course more than once you can keep the score below par.  The course record of 32 was set during the 2014 U.S. Open and most of the players in that tournament shot in the mid-30’s.  Overall the course was very well maintained with no plants creeping up on the holes and since they used primarily crushed stone around the hole the greens remained very clean. The water was clean and while not a major factor on most holes there is one where you can use it to your advantage.  There seemed to be plenty of room between the holes to make sure things didn’t feel too crowded and there were plenty of benches throughout the course to take a rest. Finally, while there is no 19th hole, they do have a Plinko-style free game at the end.

The course is conveniently located next to the Monmouth Park horse track and the track heavily influences the theme of the course.  Each hole is named after a different horse and signs at the holes provide background on the horse and its achievements.  Jockey silks and beautifully carved horses dominate the landscape and there’s something fun about playing a round with the horse race going on the background!  The course also has music playing, which is always a nice touch, and if you need to catch up on the races you can watch on the short-circuit TV in the “pro shop” shack.  Overall it’s a great course to play and we’d recommend it to anyone in the area on vacation or as a nice way to bookend a trip to the track.

Green Course

Difficulty: 7

Creativity: 5

Atmosphere: 10

Each hole has its own unique quality with just the right amount of contour and break to play differently and present a creative challenge (Two courses). Beautifully landscaped with fountains, ponds, and streams, both courses provide a relaxing atmosphere and perfect way to unwind after a long day. Gone are the windmills and clowns that you’d find on a typical “putt-putt” course. Instead you’ll find a variety of holes, some that require more skill than luck, but all of which will keep you guessing every time you come out to play.
